Throwback Thursdays: Gwen Stefani - Cool

This Throwback Thursday Article focuses on the fashion and outfits of Gwen Stefani’s “Cool” music video which debuted in the summer of 2005. Gwen Stefani’s song and music video “Cool” directed by Sophie Muller, is about two past lovers, each of them moving on (one of them in fact finding new love) and yet still wishing each other well and remaining friends. The video follows the theme of the song, with wonderfully sentimental flashbacks of Gwen and her former lover played by Spanish actor, Daniel Gonzalez. Going along with the “it’s good to see you now with someone else” idea in the song, the video interchanges scenes of the past with the current, showing Daniel’s character introducing his new girlfriend played by Erin Lokitz to Gwen.

Before we get into the refreshing and nostalgic clothing of this beautiful music video (which has lovely nods to the 40's), let me just start off by saying that Gwen Stefani whether blonde or brunette is perfection!

The video begins with Daniel Gonzalez’s character and his new girlfriend walking up to a beautiful Italian villa owned by Gwen. Ladies take a tip from Erin Lokitz here, if you are going to be meeting your current boyfriend’s ex for any reason it is MANDATORY that you look flawless!

Her hair, her décolletage, her posture…she just looks so regal!
1940’s hairgasm anyone? I’ll have what their having!

Could the hair stylist working on the video have been inspired by the lovely 1940's film noir actresses, Rita Hayworth and Lizabeth Scott .

It is clear that the song is inspired by feelings of nostalgia and it is easy to see in the music video as there are so many nods to 40’s fashion that it isn’t even funny. Like this still shot below of Gwen looking wistful and graceful as ever as she looks at this old record while waiting for her Italian hunk to speed up on a motorbike and rescue her.

Gwen's outfits and performance capture her as a young woman having a summer love along the streets of Italy.

*I need that dress in my closet to seduce hot Italian men; I love the stylist's choice to have the black bra peeking out in the front*

*Doesn't this just make you want to buy a blue vintage one-piece and drag your boyfriend to a lake...no? just me? ok moving on!*

Below Gwen and Daniel spend the day at the beach, and while everything seems fine at first there is a clear brewing tension between the two. Gwen looks lovely here with her beautiful 40’s inspired shrug and bikini top. I love her billowy peasant skirt; it has a little bit of a 50's feel but definitely works for the overall romantic look.

Daniel Gonzalez looks so handsome and scruffy in that scene like a cross between Noah from “The Notebook” and this handsome 40’s gentleman below.

Gwen's golden locket is a subtle yet powerful symbol of young love (it could possibly be a locket given to her by Daniel’s character. As the audience we don’t know this, but the possibilities are both endless and timeless.)

As the video progresses we see Gwen and Daniel's relationship become increasingly challenging and tense as they drift further apart.

And we learned that a sad Gwen Stefani is in one word magical

But alas, all is not lost we see Gwen's character evolving into a mature adult. Gone are the playful and whimsical bikini tops, peasant skirts and maxi dresses. Gone are the sensual mini dresses and the shoulder length, bouncy brunette hairdo!
Instead there is a confident blonde bombshell who knows exactly what she wants and is clearly doing well for herself!
sipping tea is the classiest!
She trades in her past style for a bold leopard top with a more modest but still sexy pencil skirt. The styles are definitely more expensive looking.

*I love the touches of leopard in both styles showcasing a more mature and happier Gwen*

And after all the obstacles it's good to see all three of them genuinely happy for each other, not to mention beautifully dressed; coming together over tea and a playful barefooted walk in the sand.

3 Fictional TV Characters whose wardrobe i'd kill for!

3. Sookie Stackhouse

Sookie Stackhouse deserves to be on this list for the simple fact that Anna Paquin is freaking stunning as a blonde.I now officially give her the title as the fae princess of the summer dress because my God does she deserve it! When Sookie isn't working in her waitress uniform at Merlot's (which seems to be less and less over the seasons); she's running around saving her small town Bon Temps in sizzling short-shorts and tantalizing summer dresses.

But hey who can blame her; she lives in a town whose only season seems to be summer. Sookie has so many hot guys on that show proclaiming their love for her it is actually ridiculous and a bit unfair to the other female inhabitants of Bon Temps. It's as if she has some type of hypnosis over every hot werewolf, shape-shifter, vampire, and vampire-fairy hybrid in Bon Temps. The first night Eric Northman met Sookie at his club he seemed unable to forget about our favorite little telepath, and I am pretty sure if not 100% certain that the red and white dress she wore that night was the cause of it!

I'm not sure if the fact that she is *SPOILER* part fae has something to do with it but in the words of Lafayette "Ms.Thing is doing it all the way right!" I mean she got ERIC FREAKING NORTHMAN to fall in love with her, you cant tell me her wardrobe had nothing to do with it! I want Eric Northman to fall in love with me...Somebody get me that red and white dress NOW!

2. Lacey Porter

Lacey Porter: Now the above outfit is not one of my favorites however; believe me when i say that this character's wardrobe very rarely misses the mark. Not many of you may know this character as of yet, but you can find her on a relatively new show called Twisted as the quintessential self-absorbed popular girl with deeper problems. Twisted also stars the adorable Maddie Hasson as Jo: a social outcast and ex best friend of Lacey who tends to get a bit self-righteous. And also stars this handsome guy Avan Jogia as Danny: former childhood best friend of Jo and Lacey who is sent away for the murder of his Aunt and returns eight years later.

Gorgeous isnt he? Ok sorry got a little distracted
Ok so why is Lacey Porter on this list, ok just look at the picture below. She's adorable but also hot in her mini skirt, tights and matching sweater, which strangely reminds me of both Velma and Daphne from Scooby Doo and the Mystery Gang.

Lacey dresses the way I would have dressed in high school if i had a popular jock boyfriend, was a size 2 and had legs for days! Yes you can pass that wardrobe and those perks right on over to me; just tell me who i have to kill? No, but seriously...  Twisted returns this January to complete its first season

1. Blair Waldorf

Blair Wladorf: All hail Queen B! Of course Blair's wardrobe is number one on my list and in my fashionable heart! With her mother as a successful fashion designer (and Eric Damon as her personal quote unquote stylist) how could she not always looks her best? Everybody remember when Blair basically hit rock bottom in season 2 and showed up to the Vanderbilt party adorning this little number. Whenever Im going through a life crisis my weekend outfit consists of an oversized tshirt, no make-up and pajamas. Fortunately no sexy striped body-con dresses are required for a date night with Ryan Gosling...and by Ryan Gosling I mean a marathon of Ryan Gosling movies on Netflix.

Blair would never be seen sporting something as grunge or as Lower Eastside as a leather jacket and chains unlike her blonde BFF Serena; however, don't let the preppy head bands fool you! She brought lolita sex appeal in the form of tantalizing thigh-highs and an innocent, pretty pout. Wearing unmentionables from La Perla it's no wonder she caught the hottest badboy in the Upper East Side, the one and only Chuck Bass!

Fast forward to season 5 where Blaire's wardrobe takes a more mature and dare i say "Kate Middletonesque" turn largely due to her complicated relationship with a less than honorable Prince Louis. Blair Waldorf wears the same dress as Kate Middleton during her engagement ceremony. Although the wedding dresses are not the same, the styles are very similar in that they are both A-line gowns with beautiful details of lace, and both Kate and Blair share simple half-up half-down hairstyles and similar elegant crowns and veils.

We've seen her transform over the past six seasons. From her perfectionist beginnings in a Constance uniform, to an unsure college student trying to find her identity upon graduating high school. We saw her quest to seduce and beguile in La Perla lingerie and at last her happily ever after with her one and only prince charming Chuck Bass, in a dreamy blue Ellie Saab wedding gown. From every garter, night gown, dress and headband in between; you have to admit you know you loved it all!
